Finding lumps or masses on your dog that you have never felt before is always a very scary thing for every dog or cat owner. You should always get any new lump checked out by your veterinarian! In this video I try my best to explain what a scary lump may look and feel like verses a not so scary lump may be. A not so scary or benign (non-cancerous) lump is one that is squishy, freely movable and pain free. A scary lump is one that is not freely movable, tightly adhered to the deeper layers of the skin or muscle, hard or firm, hot to the touch or ruptured and bleeding. These descriptions are broad since scary or cancerous lumps can do whatever they want but this is a general rule of thumb for veterinarians when we are examining lumps on dogs. The most common benign lump on a dog is the Lipoma a fatty lump. An example of a scary or cancerous lump on a dog would be for example a mast cell tumor or lymphoma. There are many more cancerous masses and benign masses that exist and that is why I strongly advise you to go to your vet if you feel a new lump on your dog.
