Laurence Steinberg presents Adolescent Decision Making & Legal Responsibility. Stanford, 2013 Dr. Laurence Steinberg presents Adolescent Decision Making and Legal Responsibility at the Colloquium on Law, Neuroscience, and Criminal Justice on March 14 -- 15, 2013 in Palo Alto, California. Dr. Steinberg is a Distinguished University Professor and the Laura H. Carnell Professor of Psychology at Temple University. The colloquium was sponsored by the MacArthur Foundation Research Network on Law and Neuroscience and co-sponsored by the Federal Judicial Center, Vanderbilt Law School, Stanford Center for Law and the Biosciences, and the Gruter Institute for Law and Behavioral Research.

Description and Learning Objectives: This session provides an introduction to the adolescent brain, legal contexts in which adolescent brain science has been cited, and on-going debates about how the science of the adolescent brain should (or should not) affect culpability assessments and sentencing decisions. Specific learning objectives include:

• Introduction to the work of the MacArthur Foundation Research Network on Law and Neuroscience Working Group on Adolescent Development, which is studying the neural and behavioral correlates of age differences in psychological capacities relevant to judgments of criminal responsibility.

• Discussion and debate about how research on the adolescent brain should, and should not, be used in legal adjudication and policymaking.
