9 Fascinating Things That Happen to Your Body While You Sleep

9 Fascinating Things That Happen to Your Body While You Sleep Sleep is such a peaceful thing, where you get to rest and relax after a hard day. However, while you might be sleeping, your body is up to some pretty weird stuff. What happens to your body during sleep is nothing short of a carnival of confusing and distressing horrors. How the body regenerates during sleep is definitely miraculous and fascinating, but that does not make it any less weird and gross. We all generally known that what sleep does to your body is helpful and beneficial to your waking self. But sleeping itself is a rather tumultuous process. Now, I will share with you about, 9 Fascinating Things That Happen to Your Body While You Sleep.

Number 1. Your Brain Goes Into Cleaning Mode.
Your brain is active both at night and during the day, but sometimes it needs a little time to tidy up the place, and sleep is the best time to do that. A study done in 2013 shows that waste removal systems in the brain happen to be more active as you slumber, particularly in REM sleep. This means that the brain is better at clearing away toxic byproducts that might build up in the body and brain, and could cause health problems. Your immune system is also working at higher levels, which means that you are keeping your body healthy and tidy, even while you rest.
Number 2. Moves Your Eyes.
As you sleep, you experience five phases of sleep, with REM as the last and most active phase. Once you complete a REM cycle, you will start the first phase anew. Seventy to 90 minutes after you fall asleep, you should be in REM sleep, and you will spend about 20 percent of your time sleeping in this stage.
Number 3. You Start To Shed Your Skin.
We do not shed our skin like snakes or have our skin flake and peel like it does during a sunburn while we sleep. However, during the night, our skin does start to fall off. Every night, your body continues to generate new skin cells, and old skin cells simply fall off of you as they die. This is done at a nearly microscopic level, as if you're just shaking off little bits of dust every time you shift while you are dozing. Every minute you sleep, you are losing tens of thousands of skin cells! Wearing makeup while you sleep can trap the dead skin cells on your face, and can lead to a zit-fest if you let it happen regularly.
Number 4. Narrows Your Throat.
As you sleep, your breathing changes and your throat naturally narrows a bit as your muscles relax. If you have experienced a partner who snores noisily, you know what it sounds like when the throat becomes a bit too narrow. Worse, the airway can close completely, causing sleep apnea.
