Newer sugar substitute gaining in popularity

Newer sugar substitute gaining in popularity CINCINNATI (WKRC) - A newer sugar replacement is gaining in popularity. It is called Swerve, and it's gaining in popularity mainly because of those who want a lower-calorie option for low-carb and keto diets.

Swerve is a blend of three ingredients: a sugar alcohol taken from corn called erythritol, a fermentable fiber called an oligosaccharide and what Swerve says are natural flavors.

It comes in powdered, brown or confectioner's versions and can be used to replace table sugar in food and drinks, such as teas or baked goods. It looks and tastes a lot like sugar and has zero calories per serving and just four grams of carbs.

The body does not appear to metabolize these carbs, however, so in this way, it does not appear to raise blood sugar levels in people with diabetes.

Right now, based on the ingredients, it does appear to have a good safety profile. As for how it tastes, you'll have to decide.
