Scenes from Notre Dame Cathedral fire in Paris

Scenes from Notre Dame Cathedral fire in Paris We don’t know how much more has been saved from the massive fire Monday that has ravaged Paris’ iconic Notre Dame Cathedral, causing the spire and roof to collapse. What we do know is that the 850-year-old cathedral houses great treasures, many of which are part of the structure itself. Among the features likely at risk or destroyed:

The cathedral’s façade features 13th-century and restored decorative portals, including 12th-century statues of the Virgin Mary on a throne holding the baby Jesus.

Millions of tourists have been awed over the years by the soaring stained-glass rose windows, some of which hail from the 13th century. There’s also a 14th-century choir screen inside the cathedral depicting the Last Supper. And the stone chimeras and gargoyles, situated on the cathedral’s towers for water drainage and decoration, are widely beloved.
