Rep. Nita Lowey, D-N.Y., chair of the House Appropriations Committee, asked U.S. Attorney General William Barr if he thought "fewer prohibited individuals would be able to purchase firearms" if the background check time period was extended. Lowey said that "three days is often not enough time to evaluate a background check with questionable information." Barr said he thinks that would put a burden on a lot of people. "Who may be buying a gun who shouldn't have a gun, is that what you're saying?" Lowey said. Barr said the emphasis should be put on upgrading the background system. Lowey also asked Barr if he supports the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act, which he affirmed.
