Let's become a bit technical on Beethoven's Moonlight, shall we?

When we see an Alla Breve (cut time) Time Signature at the beginning of a piece, often you will hear and read today that the tempo should be taken twice as fast. But... is that what Beethoven and his contemporaries exactly had in mind?
