How to Have More Peak Experiences | NLP for Self-Actualization

How to Have More Peak Experiences | NLP for Self-Actualization L. Michael Hall, one of the co-founders of the field of Neuro-Semantics, did a lot of research into using Neuro-Linguistic Programming to model self-actualizing people...

In that research one of the characteristics that he discovered of Self-Actualizing people is that they have more and more peak experiences.

You may be wondering, “What is a peak experience”?

Simply put, peak experiences are those moments that make life worth living.

Some examples of peak experiences could be your wedding day, holding your child for the first time, graduating, the moment you realized that you have a purpose, or even just walking down the street and feeling like everything is amazing etc.

Other examples of peak experiences are peak performances.

Peak performances are where you are challenged a little bit beyond what you have been able to do before, and so you are called to become more.

Not only are you called to be more but you rise to the occasion and you do! Time disappeared, your sense of self disappears, and because you are so engaged at the task at hand and because you are able perform at your absolute best potential.

As you think about peak experiences and peak performances you may want to search through your personal history and find an example or two in your life.

I had a client yesterday who used to have a phobia of having his head under water so he couldn’t swim, bathe, and even putting his head under the water in the shower was a problem (he was able to overcome that using NLP).

We were talking about it in a session and he was telling me that every once in a while when he is taking a shower and letting the water flow over his head he gets into an overwhelmingly amazing state. “It’s like I can’t believe I overcame this!”.

I asked how often he has this experience and his response, “it happens once every 3 months.” I replied surprised, “Every 3 months only? Wouldn’t you like to experience this more?”

Having that experience approximately once a quarter was his automatic pattern, his habit, his unconscious program.

If you’re passive and you wait for your experiences to come they will happen when they happen, but wouldn’t a peak experience like that be something that you want to practice and experience often?

When we practice those experiences using the tools of NLP we can harvest them and grow them so that we can experience them on command. Not only that but the more you practice them, the more frequently they will come up automatically, without you even thinking about them!
