Today we will be talking about one such scientific invention that was designed for our safety and can be still spotted in almost every office, factory and homes. We are talking about Fire extinguisher and let’s know more about it.

Its been said that the first basic fire extinguisher was a small water pump that was conceived in around 200 BC by Ctesibius of Alexandria. Post this, the same technology was revisited during the Middle Ages, when handheld squirts resembling bicycle pumps could deliver about one liter of water at a time. In the 15th century, Leonardo da Vinci invented the sprinkler system of fire safety & thus motivated many scientists to further work on this concept.

Talking about the modern fire extinguishers, it was patented in England by Ambrose Godfrey that had gun powder coating over the extinguishing liquid. This was connected with a system of fuses which were ignited, exploding the gunpowder and scattering the extinguisher solution. But the portable fire extinguisher was invented by Captain George William Manby in 1818 that consisted of a copper vessel of 3 gallons of potassium carbonate solution under compressed air. And thus began the story of fire extinguishers. After this invention scientists used soda acid, carbon tetrachloride & Carbon dioxide and designed many extinguishers.

Even today, Carbon dioxide & Mono Ammonium Phosphate are the main compounds that is used in the fire extinguishers.
