Kent Test: How To Maximise Marks in Reading Comprehension

Kent Test: How To Maximise Marks in Reading Comprehension Hayden explains his favourite five strategies for maximising your potential in the Reading Comprehension part of the Kent Test.

✅ 1. ORDER: The majority of questions in the reading paper come in order of the text. This makes it a lot easier to work through sysmtematically, saving precious seconds.

✅ 2. SUMMARISE: We use paragraphs to group information together. This makes it easy to summarise any paragraph. Do this by writing a word or two next to each paragraph. This strategy will save time when searching for answers!

✅ 3. VISUALISE: We are so much better at memorising imagery. As your child reads, encourage them to visualise the text (like a film) in their heads. It will help to process and memorise the information in the first read through.

✅ 4. QUESTION TYPES: Running out of time? Skip to the last 2-3 questions in the reading comprehension section. They are always questions related to word meanings or grammar, and are usually answerable without even reading the text. Easy marks!

✅ 5. STRATEGY: To read the text or the questions first? That is the question. Let your child experiement with reading the questions before they read the text. This can be favourable as they may passively look for answers the first time they read through the text.
