Maich Swift Architects interview: Potemkin Theatre is 'two-faced structure' | Architecture | Dezeen

Paul Maich and Ted Swift of Maich Swift Architects explain their characterful, open-air Potemkin Theatre in this exclusive video produced by Dezeen.

Located atop a flat-roof warehouse at Columbia and Brunswick Wharf in East London, the Potemkin Theatre is a narrow three-storey structure with a chequered green facade that overlooks the canal and an open back that addresses the roof of the building.

Within its structural timber frame is a winding yellow staircase that grants access to a viewing gallery at each level and an observation-deck-cum-performance-space that is concealed in the theatre's roof.

Both sides of the pavilion are designed to host a series of cultural events.

The London-based duo developed the theatre in response to the annual Antepavilion competition, which asked emerging creatives to submit proposals for an experimental, beacon-like structure.

The Potemkin Theatre is the third Antepavilion structure to be installed on the site in East London. Previous winners include a bright yellow inflatable event space built on a barge in the canal and a micro-house disguised as a ventilation duct.
