10. Village of Gásadalur
In the Faroe Islands, there is a small place called Gásadalur which can be found on the west side of Vagar. The village was founded in the 1900's, and even right when it started, it was one of the most isolated places on Earth. Surrounding much of the village is a set of mountains that reached over 2000 feet in height. And on the other side were a set of cliffs that were not easy to go down, and went straight to the nearby ocean.

9. Edinburgh of the Seven Seas, Tristan Da Cunha
There is a town called Edinburgh of the Seven Seas, Tristan Da Cunha, and it too is one of the most isolated places in the world today. This particular town is over 1200 miles away from any other settlement in all directions you can go. Thus making the settlement known as one of the most isolated places on Earth.

8. Crystal Mill
Sometimes, the most isolated of homes are one that are more victims of circumstance than anything else. For example, in Crystal Colorado, just above the Crystal River, is an abandoned place known as Crystal Mill. (How many times can I say Crystal??) Despite the name, it's not a place that milled for crystals, but rather, it was a compressor station.

7. Just Room Enough Island
In the United States (though also technically a part of Canada depending on how you look at it), there is a small island within the confines of the St. Lawrence River. The island itself is literally called "Just Room Enough Island", because this island has just enough space on it for a single house and a yard, and not much else.

6. Eremo di San Colombano
The idea of building a home into the side of a mountain isn't new, many Native American tribes and people all over the world have done that. But in Italy in the 1300's, one person wanted to build a house in the side of a mountain to ensure that no one disturbed them. And thus was born the Eremo di San Colombano.

5. Maldives
Despite what you might think, not all isolated homes are broken down, or lived in by hermits or people seeking to be far apart from society forever. In the case of the country known as the Maldives, they're an isolated nation made up of atolls (islands composed of reefs and corals). And on those atolls they have made resorts, hotels, and villas for people to go and visit.

4. Casa do Penedo
Casa do Penedo literally translates to "House of Stone", and this accurate title suits the home found in the Fafe Mountain of Portugal. This particular house was carved out of four giant boulders, all four of which can still be seen today if you choose to go and visit this house for yourself.

3. Long Studio
In Fogo Island, Canada, just off of Newfoundland, there is a very long home known as Long Studio. The people of the area are very independent, and want to contribute to the world in their own way. To that end, they made the Long Studio to both be a symbol for the seasons of the world, and also be a conduit for those who want to do art themselves.

2. La Rinconada, Peru
The country of Peru is home to the Andes mountains, and within the Andes is a settlement known as La Rinconada. This town sits 17,000 feet above sea level, this in turn makes it the highest human settlement on Earth at present. It should be noted though, that this town is not small, it's actually rather large. 50,000 people reside in La Rinconada.

1. Solvay Hut
The Solvay Hut is a true hut that can be found on the mountain known as the Matterhorn. Or more specifically, it can be found near Zermatt in the canton of Valais. You'll find it over 13,000 feet above sea level, and it's owned by the Swiss Alpine Club. It was built in 1917, and is intended to be used only in an emergency. And it was built (and later rebuilt) with that in mind.
