How the U.S. is fueling President Rodrigo Duterte’s bloody war on drugs in the Philippines

How the U.S. is fueling President Rodrigo Duterte’s bloody war on drugs in the Philippines San Francisco's District 6 supervisor Matt Haney, whose constituency consists of a large swath of the city's Filipino population, talks about how President Duterte's war on drugs functions as a political device justifying the extrajudicial killings of the administration's critics and opponents. “This is a policy of the Philippine government to target and assassinate people they view as their enemies,” says Haney, who recently returned from a fact-finding mission to the Philippines to investigate the attempted assassination of Brandon Lee by Philippine paramilitary forces. Born and raised in San Francisco, Lee has spent the last decade organizing among indigenous communities in the Cordillera region of the Philippines, fighting for indigenous land rights. “It seems the U.S. government not only is not speaking out on this, but continuing to provide hundreds of millions of dollars in military aid to the Philippine military,” Haney says. “We have been calling for our representatives here to speak out.”
