Factors Affecting Substance Use Relapse & Addiction:
In this video I review three different journal papers which focus on factors that affect substance use relapse and addiction. I also cover off some interesting points from a fourth paper by the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
In a previous video I covered the impact of stress on alcohol and other drugs relapse. Stress and stressful life events are still major contributing factors to relapse, and often a driver for returning to full active addiction. In addition to stress however, there are a range of other factors which influence substance use relapse and re-engagement back to active addiction. Some of these primary factors include, but are not limited to the following:
- Genetics/Hereditary Factors
- Sociodemographic factors
- Social / Family / Personal relationship dynamics
- Existence of mental health disorders and/or personality disorders
- Trauma and/or childhood experiences
- Personality factors (5 Factor personality model: i.e. neuroticism)
- Employment status
- Interpersonal conflict
- Lack of coping skills / low stress tolerance/resilience
- Lack of engagement with recovery programs (i.e. 12 steps and other groups)
