Hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Catalonia's capital city of Barcelona on Sunday, ahead of King Felipe VI and Princess Leonor's planned visit to attend the Princess of Girona Awards ceremony, set to take place on Monday.

Footage shows demonstrators blocking Diagonal avenue in front of 'Catalonia's Palace of Congresses', as they chant anti-monarchy slogans, wave pro-independence flags, and call for the release of the jailed Catalan politicians. A small number of supporters of the monarchy can also be spotted behind a fence, as they raised a Spanish flag.

The protest, which was organised by pro-independence groups such as the Committees for the Defense of the Republic (CDR), comes a day ahead of the 2019 Princess of Girona Awards, that will count with the presence of the Spanish King Philip and his daughter, Princess Leonor.
