I visited Chiang Mai in January 2019. I've lived in China for the last 6 years. So here is my take on Thailand.
The first thing I dislike about Thailand is transportation. I hate baht buses and tuk-tuks. Chiang mail has very poor public transport. Chiang Mai has 3 public bus lines, that's the extent of the transit system. Buses run every half hour. Otherwise, you need to sweat in baht buses and inhale fumes. One can buy a scooter, but please be aware that police have many checkpoints, particularly in the Old City, where they shake down foreigners for fines because most foreigners don't have Thai driver's licences. The fines are something on the order of 500 baht. I am assuming Bangkok has a much better transportation system that the rest of Thailand, though.
There are not many supermarkets in Chiang Mai, and again, if one doesn't own a car or a scooter, shopping for food may be difficult unless one lives near a supermarket. Chiang Mai does have a great wholesale food market in Muang Mai, but again without wheels, it may be difficult to get to. I've lived in Shenzhen, and it has a fantastic transportation system, very fast and very clean since it is new.
While a baht bus fare maybe 30 baht, but at the end of the day, the costs start adding up. Also, many times baht bus drivers refuse to go to certain areas or quote very high rates. Just to give an example, from the night market to Festival Shopping mall they would ask 100 baht. Refuse to pay the high fare if they try to nail you unless you had agreed to it. Nearby places should even cost 20 baht.
