What has happened to Tyrion on #GameofThrones? The character is still well written and as beloved as ever, but he has lost his magic touch over the past two seasons. Tyrion used to be one of the smartest, and as Sansa points out in the Season 8 premiere, cleverest man in the world. Capable of playing the game against anyone in the realm, being a fantastic and underappreciated hand, and most importantly survive for as long as he has. But since Season 7, his tenure as Daenerys’ hand of the queen hasn’t been all that great. He’s been outmaneuvered and outsmarted several times already, and now he actually believes Cersei will ride her army to the north to help battle the dead. Is Tyrion just washed up or is he actually planning something else?

The scene with him and Sansa in the recent premiere is one of the most fascinating moments so far in this new season. The two have a long history with each other, as we all know by now. The two trade stories about Joffrey's wedding and their time in King’s Landing, until Sansa ends the convo by suggesting Tyrion might not actually be that same clever Tyrion as before. The first logical explanation for all of this is that, well, yes Tyrion is a little washed up. Benioff and Weiss seem to acknowledge the complaints aimed towards them about the way Tyrion was portrayed in Season 7.
