News You Need to Know, E-receipt bill would limit speech AB 161, the bill that aims to make e-receipts the default receipt in California, has moved a step closer to becoming law. There are some improvements to the bill, largely thanks to the CRA making our objections known. However, there is now a glaring problem: the newest version of this bill would limit what you can write on any printed version of a receipt: the information would have to be directly related to the transaction, not to any good causes you’re raising money for or community events you’re trying to promote. The question is, why do California lawmakers care what a restaurant or store writes on its guest receipts?
