How a simple mesh could clean up oil spills

How a simple mesh could clean up oil spills Angus is a PhD student in our Chemistry Department. For the last three years, he has been developing a special coating that could help to clean up oil spills. What’s more, it could be a faster and more eco-friendly way to do it.

The coating is simply sprayed onto stainless steel mesh and can then separate oil from water. At the same time, it also kills the bacteria in the water.

In this video, Angus talks us through the experiment.

The research is led by Professor Jas Pal Badyal who is widely considered a leader in the field of surface science and was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2016 in recognition of his pioneering research.
