So what is line of sight and how do you fly a drone line of sight? It refers to maintaining an uninterrupted and unassisted line of sight between the pilot and the drone. So what does that mean? Uninterrupted means there's nothing between the pilot's eyes and the drone, so if you fly your drone behind a building you now can't see the drone so the pilot doesn't have line of sight.
Unassisted means you're not looking through binoculars or a telescope at your drone flying miles away, you need to be able to see it without any extra help.
So why do you need to maintain line of sight. Well firstly it's number one in the UK Drone Code, you have to maintain a direct view with your drone.
Secondly by maintaining a line of sight, it means the pilot has a clear vision of the drone, can see exactly where it is, the way it's facing, you can clearly navigate its flight path.
This also means that they have a peripheral view, if a helicopter or plane comes flying into their airspace then they're aware of it they can take action.
This also means that you can clearly navigate around any trees or buildings that you might be flying around you can make sure that you're not going to collide with any of these maintaining line-of-sight gives that pilot the peripheral view of their surroundings.
If all you're doing is looking at the screen on your camera you don’t know where the drone is, what it's doing, anything near the drone so there's potential you're going to collide.
That's not to say that you can't fly your drone just looking at the screen or if you're into FPV flying first person view flying you can do this, but there are some additional rules that you need to follow.
