ANGRY ISIOLO RESIDENT ASK GOVERNOR KUTI TO PAY STRIKING ISIOLO HEALTHCARE WORKERS

ANGRY ISIOLO RESIDENT ASK GOVERNOR KUTI TO PAY STRIKING ISIOLO HEALTHCARE WORKERS ISIOLO, 27TH AUGUST 2019
Medical services in Isiolo County were yesterday paralyzed for several hours as healthcare workers in all public health facilities within the County staged a go slow over unpaid salaries for two months.

Led by the Chairman, Kenya National Union of Clinical officers (KUCO) Isiolo Chapter Mohamed Abdi, the medics said that they have persevered for a long time, to an extent that some of their colleagues were thrown out of their houses for failure to pay house rent, a situation that called for fundraisers among the healthcare workforce to help them out.

Abdi also noted that apart from delayed salaries, the county administration has failed to appropriately address the issue of promotion, with healthcare providers stagnating within the same job group for several years.

Patients who thronged the County Referral hospital since early morning oblivious of the situation on the ground were left stranded at the waiting bay with no one to attend to them, as the outpatient department remained shut down for the better part of the day.

They called upon those in authority to move with speed and address the concerns raised by the health workers, in order to persuade them to resume their duties and alleviate further human suffering.

The go slow was however cut short in the afternoon following the intervention of the County governor Mohamed Kuti who assured the medics that their July salaries have already been processed and would reach their respective bank accounts today.

Governor Kuti sympathized with the medics, but was quick to exonerate his administration from the stand-off, arguing that the county government received some money very late on Friday last week, therefore making it hard for the finance officers to complete the process of paying the salaries over the weekend.

He assured them that the July salary would reach their accounts today with the August pay also set to be processed by Friday this week.

Normalcy returned across all public health facilities after the medics agreed to return to their workstations following the governor’s address, but vowed to take to the streets if the promise is not actualized by Wednesday.
