Who can fail to be charmed by the cute little faces of these dolls, which exude a nostalgic elegance, a soothing sense of the good old days of Japan’s past? Memories of life in rural villages live on in their simple, spare, formal beauty.
There are young people who preserve the traditions inherited from their predecessors and pass them down to the future:

Tsugaru Kokeshi Craftsman: Abo Masafumi (阿保 正文さん)
Born 1983 in Aomori Prefecture
Tsugaru Kokeshi Master Craftsman: Abo Mutsuhide (阿保 六知秀さん)

In April 2005, he began to learn from his father, Abo Mutsuhide, and strives to improve the technology on a daily basis to open up the future of Tsugaru traditional Kokeshi. Mr. Mutsuhide served as the chairman of the Tsugaru tradition Kokeshi Builders Association and won numerous awards. He received the Prime Minister's award at the 55th All Japan Kokeshi competition. Tsugaru traditional kokeshi has a built-in structure that cuts off the head and torso from a single tree.
