They prepare themselves with academics, standardized tests, extracurricular activities, and a host of research as to the best fit for their interests. The colleges, for their part, provide marketing materials, campus outreach, tours, and more to try to lure talented students with good potential. They also provide information to third-party ranking companies to list them among their peers. The inputs to the ranking algorithm are public knowledge and the stakes are high. That’s why some colleges have been discovered using fake data for rankings.
