The Mari are a Finno-Ugric ethnic group, who have traditionally lived along the Volga and Kama rivers in Russia. Before the October Revolution, the Mari (like most of the peoples of Russia) did not have their own statehood and were scattered in the area around Kazan, Vyatka, Kostroma, Nizhny Novgorod, Ufa and Perm provinces.

Today the Republic of Mari is part of the Volga Federal District and today forms part of the Volga-Vyatsky economic region...
In the north and east it borders with the Kirov region , in the south-east with the Republic of Tatarstan , in the south-west with the Chuvash Republic , in the west with the Nizhny Novgorod region .
